Toppan Photomasks and GLOBALFOUNDRIES extend joint venture and make further capital investment at Dresden Advanced Mask Technology Center

ROUND ROCK, Texas, and MILPITAS, Calif.

Toppan Photomasks, Inc. (TPI) and GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. today announced that they have executed definitive agreements to extend the Advanced Mask Technology Center (AMTC) joint venture in Dresden, Germany at least through 2017. The AMTC provides leading-edge photomasks to GLOBALFOUNDRIES and to TPI's European and global customer network.

Under the terms of the agreements, the joint venture, owned in equal parts by TPI and GLOBALFOUNDRIES, will continue its mission of developing and manufacturing leading edge photomasks supporting the aggressive technology roadmap of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and supporting both the leading edge and standard product needs of TPI's customers.

AMTC's near-term focus will be on ramping mask output for 28nm and 20nm wafer fabrication, with strategic focus on the development and introduction of 14nm optical and Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) technologies. To support this path, the partners plan new investments over the next several years. This capital investment will be used to increase tool capability as well as capacity, and comes on top of the overall investment at the site of EUR 363 M over the last ten years. AMTC's headcount is expected to increase according to business development and need.

AMTC will continue to benefit from access to GLOBALFOUNDRIES' and TPI's manufacturing excellence in Dresden, Toppan's world-class mask technology development, and the extensive collaborative relationships that GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Toppan have established in the industry.

In addition to the agreement to extend the AMTC, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has designated TPI as its preferred mask supplier for its advanced mask needs supporting GLOBALFOUNDRIES 300mm manufacturing sites in Dresden, New York and Singapore.

"Advanced mask manufacturing capabilities are a critical element of success in the foundry business, especially with growing lithography challenges at the leading edge," said GLOBALFOUNDRIES chief technology officer Gregg Bartlett. "GLOBALFOUNDRIES and TPI have a rich heritage of partnership going back nearly 20 years, and we are pleased to be extending the AMTC partnership to continue the delivery of high-end masks and world-class cycle times to support our customers."

"We have been part of the AMTC since its inception in 2002, and are excited to extend our participation in the AMTC and our partnership with GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The Dresden team has demonstrated they can consistently meet our local and global customer's needs over a wide range of products, with exceptional quality, cycle time and technology," said David Murray, TPI CEO. "We look forward to our continued participation in AMTC and supporting GLOBALFOUNDRIES' needs on a global basis."

"The long-term extension of the Joint Venture plus the expected future investments show the partners' recognition of the excellent work done by the AMTC team" said Thomas Schmidt, General Manager of the AMTC. "During the last 10 years we have consistently met the requirements and challenges of our partners and their customers. The entire AMTC team is looking forward to the continuing partnership and we are confident that the AMTC will remain an important cornerstone of success for GLOBALFOUNDRIES and TPI."

"Today we are able to say that Saxony as a prime location of microelectronics has never been better positioned. Today's renewal and stepping up of the Joint Ventures means a further strengthening of Silicon Saxony with its meanwhile more than 2,000 enterprises. As underlined by the Saxon State Minister for Higher Education Research and the Arts, Sabine von Schorlemer, this success is an indicator of the significant technological scope and the excellent standard of local research activities. "I am determined to continually advertise that the relevance to the system of microelectronics is recognized and that the deriving consequences for industry and research policy are drawn."

The AMTC was founded in 2002 by AMD, Infineon Technologies and DuPont Photomasks, which became Toppan Photomasks in 2005. Subsequently, GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Toppan Photomasks became the ownership partners in 2009.
